Ed Sheeran ‘nearly broke Spotify’ with his new album Divide

Today marks a week since the release of Ed Sheeran’s third studio album, Divide.

Sheeran’s album has achieved over 273 million streams in 7 days on Spotify, breaking the previous record set by The Weeknd with his release of Starboy in November 2016. Divide has also achieved over 1 billion views on YouTube and the physical albums sales are expected to surpass 500,000.

At one point this week, all 16 songs from the album were in the Top 16 streamed tracks on Spotify, a spokesperson from the streaming site explained; “It’s fair to say Ed Sheeran nearly broke Spotify this week.”

The only artist thought to have sold more albums than Sheeran in the last 10 years is Adele. Adele’s last album, 25, is still holding the record of most albums sales, standing at 800,000 worldwide.

During an interview with GQ Magazine, Ed commented on this: “Adele is the one person who’s sold more records than me in the past 10 years. She’s the only person I need to sell more records than. That’s a big feat because her last album sold 20 million. But if I don’t set her as the benchmark then I’m selling myself short.”
