The London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) is set to return this summer with an impressive programme of film premieres, celebrity appearances and industry events, bringing together some of the biggest names in South Asian cinema and entertainment.
Celebrating its 17th year, the festival will take place across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Bradford from 9 to 16 July, showcasing independent films, special screenings and discussions that highlight the diversity and creativity of South Asian storytelling.
One of the festival’s biggest attractions will be a special appearance by Bollywood superstar and filmmaker Aamir Khan. The actor will take part in an exclusive conversation event at BFI Southbank as part of celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the Oscar-nominated film Lagaan. The event will give audiences a chance to hear first-hand reflections on his career and the lasting impact of one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated productions.
Speaking about the milestone, Aamir Khan said:
“As Lagaan completes 25 years, it’s hard to put into words what this journey has meant. We made the film with a lot of belief, passion and honesty, never imagining the kind of love it would receive and continue to receive all these years later.”
The festival will also host a highly anticipated reunion of the cast behind the iconic BBC comedy series Goodness Gracious Me. Sanjeev Bhaskar, Meera Syal, Nina Wadia, Kulvinder Ghir and Anil Gupta are expected to reunite on stage, offering audiences a nostalgic look back at a programme that helped transform British Asian representation on television.
Opening this year’s festival will be the European premiere of 52 Blue, directed by award-winning filmmaker Ali El Arabi. The film stars Adil Hussain and Neha Dhupia and follows a powerful coming-of-age journey that explores resilience, hope and self-discovery. Members of the cast and creative team are expected to attend festival screenings.
Another major highlight is the festival’s pioneering showcase exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence and filmmaking. Bringing together filmmakers, creatives and technology experts, the event aims to explore how emerging technologies are influencing the future of cinema and opening new opportunities for storytellers.
Alongside headline events, audiences can enjoy a wide selection of UK premieres, independent features, short films and panel discussions covering themes ranging from identity and family to social change and cultural heritage. The programme also includes dedicated showcases for emerging British Asian talent and LGBTQIA+ South Asian voices.
