Aamir Khan’s film will leave you with a smile and a tear at the same time – Laal Singh Chaddha

Social media’s current obsession with the trend of boycotting Bollywood films reached another level with Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’. However, despite the criticism, Aamir’s film did manage to find some backing from his industry peers. And now, young filmmaker Tathagata Ghosh whose recent films ‘Miss Man’ and ‘Dhulo’ received critical acclaim from all corners has shared his honest review after watching ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’.

According to the talented filmmaker who loves to explore socio-political issues, he had gone to watch ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ with a blank slate and the film just moved him.

“Being an admirer of ‘Forrest Gump’, the cinephile in me of course will try to find parallels between the original and the Indian adaptation. But once the film started and the story of Laal unfolded, I was lost in his childhood and growing up years. ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ stood out on its own for me. It made me forget the night from a decade ago when Tom Hanks made me cry with his performance. I was only into the world of Laal Singh Chadda, his mother and Rupa, the love of his life,” shares Tathagata.

The young filmmaker also explains what makes the film beautiful and it is the love story at its core something which was not that prominent in the original, “For me, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is the innocent tale of love between Laal and Rupa. You feel every beat of their emotional journeys and really root for them to be together. Though the film touches on some of the key socio-political events of India, it doesn’t take a deep dive of course. And I feel one of the reasons behind that might be the current state of affairs in our country- you can’t criticize certain political figures and events. And so, if you show some and leave out the others, it might turn out to be unbalanced! Hence, director Advait Chandan focuses strongly on the love story. And that really worked I feel.”

He further adds, “If I have to complain about any aspect of the film, it would be the relationship between Laal and Bala (Bubba’s character). That was not fully fleshed out hence when Bala dies, you don’t feel too much. Leaving aside this underwhelming part of the film, Laal Singh Chaddha was a wholesome movie experience and definitely deserves your attention. It will leave you with a smile and a tear at the same time!”

Meanwhile, Tathagata is overwhelmed to see the response his two films ‘Dhulo’ and ‘Miss Man’ is getting after their digital release.
