In a shocking turn of events, actor turned politician Raj Babbar has been sentenced to two years in prison in a 26-year-old case. Shocked right! As per the latest reports, the veteran actor got a two-year prison term in connection with an old case for assaulting a polling officer during the general elections in 1996. On Thursday, the Mumbai court reportedly passed the verdict in this case with the actor present in the court. Raj has also been imposed a fine of Rs 8,500.
As per reports, Raj Babbar has been found “guilty of interfering in government duties and physical assault.” During the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, Babbar was in Samajwadi Party and was contesting elections from Lucknow when he assaulted a government officer. An election officer named Shri Krishna Singh Rana lodged a complaint against the actor at the Wazirganj police station in Uttar Pradesh. In the complaint, the polling officer alleged that Raj Babbar assaulted him on the false pretext of facilitating bogus voting.
After the voting process was over, the actor came outside the booth and assaulted the officer. At that time, the 70-year-old actor contested the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat on a Samajwadi Party ticket against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The actor was defeated by them by a huge margin.
Meanwhile, Raj Babbar is a popular name in Bollywood as he has been a part of the film industry for more than two decades. He worked in more than 150 movies and 30 plays. Babbar is known for his work in films like Saazish, Aankhen, Dalaal, The Gambler, Andaz, Yaarana, Barsaat, and Ziddi to name a few. He was last seen in the web series Dil Bekaraar, which was based on the 2013 novel Those Pricey Thakur Girls by Anuja Chauhan. Later, Raj Babbar joined Politics and started his political career with Samajwadi Party in the early 90s and was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1994. He joined the Indian National Congress in 2008.
