Anoushka Kale, a 20-year-old British Indian student, has been elected as the President of the Cambridge Union, one of the world’s most renowned debating societies, for its Easter 2025 term.
This historic achievement makes her one of the few South Asian women to hold the prestigious position. Anoushka’s election reflects a growing push for diversity and inclusion within historic institutions like Cambridge.
Currently pursuing an English Literature degree at Sidney Sussex College, Anoushka won the presidency unopposed, securing overwhelming support. She emphasized her commitment to expanding diversity, stating her goals include strengthening partnerships with cultural societies like the India Society and making Union events more financially accessible by reducing ticket costs.

Anoushka’s presidency comes at a pivotal time as the Union balances its historic legacy with the challenges of modernity. The Union, known for hosting iconic figures like Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, and Bill Gates, recently raised membership fees to maintain its historic Grade-II listed building. Addressing concerns about inclusivity, Anoushka plans to collaborate with cultural groups, host global debate motions, and ensure greater representation in leadership committees.
Serving as the Debates Officer, she has already spearheaded initiatives that broaden the Union’s scope, from hosting international speakers to fostering lively debates on global issues. Her plans include revitalizing member engagement with initiatives such as member-driven motions and debate dinner ballots.
A Landmark for South Asians in the UK
Anoushka’s election is a testament to the growing representation of South Asians in influential positions across the UK. Her journey symbolizes the empowerment of young South Asian women navigating traditional institutions and making meaningful changes.
Her leadership reflects the aspirations of a new generation that values inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation, ensuring the Cambridge Union remains a beacon of free speech and a platform for global voices.
