Global business leader and philanthropist leaves behind a legacy of enterprise, integrity, and service.
Gopichand Hinduja, chairman of the Hinduja Group and head of Britain’s richest family, has passed away in London at the age of 85 after a long illness. His death marks the end of an era for one of the most influential business dynasties in the world.
Born in India, Gopichand Hinduja was the second of the four Hinduja brothers, whose vision and determination transformed a modest family trading firm, founded in 1914, into one of the world’s most powerful conglomerates.

Under his stewardship, the Hinduja Group grew into a diversified global enterprise spanning energy, finance, automotive, real estate, healthcare, and media, with a combined estimated value exceeding £35 billion. The group’s success consistently placed the Hinduja family at the top of the UK Rich List, earning them recognition as Britain’s wealthiest family.
Hinduja’s leadership was defined by his focus on long-term growth, integrity in business, and cross-border collaboration. He played a pivotal role in strengthening Indo-UK trade and investment ties, championing partnerships that bridged the economic aspirations of both nations.
Beyond the boardroom, Gopichand Hinduja was deeply committed to philanthropy and social responsibility. Guided by the Hinduja family’s principle that “My duty is to work; the results are with God,” he invested in causes that uplifted communities worldwide.
His charitable efforts supported initiatives in education, healthcare, culture, and spiritual welfare, including contributions through the Hinduja Foundation, which has funded hospitals, schools, and humanitarian projects across India, the UK, and beyond.
Colleagues often described him as a visionary businessman with a humble heart, someone who believed wealth was meaningful only when used for the greater good.
Gopichand Hinduja’s passing follows that of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja, who died in 2023. Together, they were the driving force behind the group’s global expansion and enduring reputation for excellence and ethics.
The next generation of the Hinduja family is now set to continue the brothers’ legacy, carrying forward their values of integrity, unity, and service.
Founded more than a century ago, the Hinduja Group continues to thrive, with key holdings such as Gulf Oil, Ashok Leyland, and significant investments in luxury hospitality, including the Raffles London at The OWO a project that epitomizes the family’s blend of tradition and innovation.
A UK lawmaker described Hinduja’s death as “the end of an era for British business”, paying tribute to his “unparalleled contribution to global trade, industry, and philanthropy.”
As tributes pour in from world leaders, business figures, and community representatives, Gopichand Hinduja is remembered not only as a titan of industry but as a symbol of perseverance, faith, and humility. His journey, from the streets of Mumbai to the pinnacle of British business, stands as an inspiration for generations to come.
BritAsia TV extends its deepest condolences to the Hinduja family and to the countless individuals whose lives were touched by Gopichand Hinduja’s vision, generosity, and leadership.
“His legacy is not just measured in wealth, but in the lives he improved and the bridges he built between nations.”
