Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s Legacy Immortalised in London: Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol Unveil Bronze Statue in Leicester Square

Bollywood magic meets London streets as DDLJ becomes the first Indian film honoured with a statue. A testament to its enduring impact on British-South Asian culture and global cinema.

In a moment that bridges continents and generations, Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a life-sized bronze statue of their beloved characters “Raj & Simran” from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) at London’s famed Leicester Square. This historic tribute coincides with the film’s 30th anniversary and marks the first time an Indian movie has been honoured in the celebrated “Scenes in the Square” cinematic trail.

A Fitting Tribute to a Global Bollywood Classic

DDLJ, released in 1995 under Yash Raj Films, quickly became more than a hit, it turned into a cultural phenomenon, celebrated far beyond India’s borders. The film’s storyline, featuring a chance meeting in London’s Leicester Square as the start of Raj and Simran’s romance, always gave it a special connection to the city.

By placing the statue outside the well-recognised Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on the eastern terrace of Leicester Square – the legacy of DDLJ is firmly anchored in the heart of London’s film-culture landscape.

For the UK’s large South Asian population, this isn’t just about a movie, it’s about visibility, identity, and cultural pride. DDLJ has long served as a shared memory and emotional touchstone across generations of British Punjabis, Indians, and South Asians. The statue symbolises not only nostalgia, but belonging: a recognition that Bollywood and its stories are part of Britain’s multicultural fabric.

Leicester Square, already home to statues from global cinematic legends, now welcomes Bollywood, placing Indian cinema on a global stage. As Mark Williams from the Heart of London Business Alliance noted, this statue is “a celebration of Bollywood’s global appeal and London’s diversity.”

At the unveiling, Shah Rukh Khan shared heartfelt reflections on the film’s timelessness:

“DDLJ was made with a pure heart. We wanted to tell a story about love, how it can bridge barriers … and I think this is why DDLJ has had a lasting impact for over 30 years now.”

Kajol added her gratitude to the UK audience and expressed how meaningful it was to bring Raj & Simran back to a place that featured in the original film.

The unveiling ceremony attracted fans from across the UK and beyond, many travelled to London just to witness the moment, turning a regular plaza into a celebration of love, cinema, and cultural unity.

  • A Story of Love & Identity: DDLJ captured the hearts of non-resident Indians (NRIs) and diaspora families, reflecting struggles, dreams and love across borders. That resonance only grew stronger among the UK’s Indian community.

  • London as a Backdrop of Dreams: Scenes shot at King’s Cross, Leicester Square, Tower Bridge & more made British locales part of Bollywood romance, creating a shared sense of nostalgia for those living in the UK.

  • Intergenerational Legacy: Nearly every generation knows DDLJ. Its songs, dialogues, emotions; they continue to bind people across time, language and geography.

By immortalising Raj and Simran in bronze, London honours not just a film but a legacy of cultural connection that spans continents.

  • It marks the first ever Indian film statue in a major iconic Western film trail, signalling growing acceptance and recognition of Bollywood’s global influence.

  • It encourages diaspora communities, South Asian and beyond, to see their stories and cultural icons embedded into international heritage sites.

  • It paves the way for more cross-cultural collaborations, film celebrations, and transnational storytelling that celebrates diversity.

For the millions of British Indians, South Asians, and Bollywood lovers worldwide, Raj & Simran’s statue stands as a monument to shared memories, shared dreams, and shared identity.
