Emma Chamberlain ‘wears’ Maharaja of Patiala’s necklace to Met Gala 2022

Patiala necklace history: Popular American Youtuber Emma Chamberlain made her debut at the Met Gala 2022 dressed in Louis Vitton but her choice of jewellery has garnered more attention this year as she wore Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh’s choker necklace.

At Met Gala 2022, Emma Chamberlain decided to compliment her Louis Vitton with a diamond necklace that once belonged to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.

As per the reports, the Maharaja Of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh, owned DeBeers diamonds. He had commissioned Cartier to make a necklace with the De Beers diamond. The necklace was reportedly made in 1928. It was known as the Patiala Necklace.

The neckpiece has five rows of platinum chains embellished with 2930 diamonds and even some Burmese rubies. The De Beers diamond is placed at the centre of the necklace.

It was the most expensive jewellery ever made in history. It would have cost over $30 million dollars in its original form.

Several reports stated that the Maharaja had reportedly bought the largest diamond in 1889. Later, it was mined from South Africa in 1888. Bhupinder Singh had spotted it while it was put on display at the Paris Universal exhibition.

Then in 1948, the necklace went missing from the Patiala’s royal treasury and it reappeared mysteriously during a Sotheby’s auction in 1982, after almost 32 years. Also, it was not in its entirety as only the De Beers diamond was up for the auction.
