Geeta Basra Returns to Cinema with Punjabi Family Drama Mehar

After nearly a decade away from Indian cinema, Geeta Basra is back – and she’s making her return in style with Mehar, a moving Punjabi family drama releasing worldwide on September 5, 2025. Known for her roles in The Train, Dil Diya Hai, and Lock, Basra steps back into the spotlight with a role that promises to resonate deeply across generations.

In Mehar, Basra plays Simi, a woman navigating the highs and lows of marriage, motherhood, and life’s unexpected challenges. Her journey highlights both vulnerability and resilience, with themes of love, second chances, and redemption woven throughout. Speaking about her comeback, Basra described Mehar as “a deep and meaningful story, with a powerful message that speaks directly to the heart.”

Basra emphasises that Mehar is unlike anything Punjabi cinema has seen recently: “It’s an emotional, family-driven story, where every character has an important part to play. That kind of relatable family-friendly entertainment hasn’t come in a long time.” The film also carries a nostalgic 90s touch, blending heartfelt drama with strong music and universal emotions.

Geeta Basra calls Raj Kundra the 'best co-star' ahead of his Punjabi debut in 'Mehar' - The Statesman

Her character Simi represents a woman of today – soft yet strong, fiercely devoted to family yet unafraid to face life’s struggles. “Women of all ages will really relate to her,” Basra explained.

One of Basra’s favourite moments from filming was a powerful face-off scene with co-star Raj Kundra: “It was so different from who I am, but stepping out of my comfort zone and showing that much anger was incredibly rewarding.”

She credits her inspiration to women who balance work, family, and personal dreams – including her own mother and daughter. “Before, women were written off after marriage and motherhood. That has thankfully changed. Seeing my daughter proud that I’m living my dream inspires me every day.”

Proud of her Punjabi roots, Basra highlights the industry’s growth and global reach: “Punjabi films are pulling audiences to theatres worldwide, even as some Hindi films struggle. That’s something we should be really proud of.”

Basra calls Mehar a “cinematic film made for the big screen – a full package of visuals, music, and emotions.” She believes it will appeal to all ages and inspire continued support for Punjabi cinema. Watch the trailer here:
