Gurpurab 2020 Celebrates 551st Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Founder of Sikhism

Today marks the celebration of Gurpurab or ‘the day of guru’ – a sacred day where Sikhs all around the world will venerate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism.

The Sikh community will honour today as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the religion of Sikhism and the first of the Sikh Gurus. He was born in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi, present-day Shekhupura District in Pakistan. This place is popularly known as Nanakana Sahib.

As per the Hindu lunar calendar, it is one of the holiest festivals for the Sikh community which is celebrated worldwide every year on the full moon day of the month Kartik, which usually falls in November in the western calendar. However, this year, the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak will be observed.

The day is also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti and each year, the celebration of Gurpurab is marked on a huge scale all around the world. However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, the celebrations will be more moderate than previous years.

To celebrate the day in lieu of large gatherings, politicians and celebrities took to social media to wish their followers and fans a Happy Gurpurab.

In the UK, politicians from Preet Kaur Gill to Labour Leader Sir Kier Starmer wished the Sikh faith a Happy Gurupurab.

Starmer shared a video message and tweeted: “I would like to send my heartfelt best wishes to all Sikhs throughout the UK and across the world, as you celebrate the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith. #HappyGurpurab“.

The Labour Party also extended the sentiment and tweeted: “Today is the 551st birth anniversary of #GuruNanakDevJi, the founder of the Sikh faith. In these extraordinary times, his message of equality, unity and service to all of humankind feels so relevant. To all celebrating here and across the world, #HappyGurpurab.”

Preet Kaur Gill shared a video message and captioned her post: “I want to wish Sikhs in the UK and all around the world a very happy #Gurpurab. We can all learn from #GuruNanakDevJi timeless message of oneness, of selfless service, and standing up to injustices. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.”

Stars in the Bollywood and entertainment industry also took to their social platforms to wish the Sikh faith the same – from Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar to Diljit Dosanjh and Ammy Virk.

Bachchan shared a picture from his home study and tweeted: “T 3737 – .. my wishes and greetings on this auspicious occasion of Gurupurab .. the birth anniversary of GURU NANAK DEV ji .. the 551 st .. .. and I look up from my desk .. and HE is there with me .. with his blessings .. Sat naam wahe Guru !!”

Akshay Kumar tweeted: “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. May Baba ji bless us all. Happy Gurpurab! #GuruNanakJayanti.”

Diljit Dosanjh shared a short film and tweeted: “DHAN GURU NANAK JI

Gurpurab Dian Sab Sangtan Nu Lakh Lakh Wadhaiyan

BABA ANG SANG SAHAI HOVE TE SABEY KAARJ RAAS KAREY

#Sikh.”

Ammy Virk tweeted: “Happy gurupurab

NANAK NAAM CHARHDIKALA TERE BHAANE SARBAT DA BHALA.”

On Guru Nanak’s Birthday, also known as Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav, BritAsia TV wishes everyone across the Sikh faith a Happy Gurpurab 2020.
