Gurpurab 2020 Celebrates 551st Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Founder of Sikhism

Today marks the celebration of Gurpurab or ‘the day of guru’ – a sacred day where Sikhs all around the world will venerate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism.

The Sikh community will honour today as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the religion of Sikhism and the first of the Sikh Gurus. He was born in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi, present-day Shekhupura District in Pakistan. This place is popularly known as Nanakana Sahib.

As per the Hindu lunar calendar, it is one of the holiest festivals for the Sikh community which is celebrated worldwide every year on the full moon day of the month Kartik, which usually falls in November in the western calendar. However, this year, the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak will be observed.

The day is also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti and each year, the celebration of Gurpurab is marked on a huge scale all around the world. However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, the celebrations will be more moderate than previous years.
