Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood urges witnesses to come forward following the racially-aggravated rape of a woman in her 20s in Walsall. A 32-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the attack.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has described the racially-aggravated rape of a young woman in Walsall as a “horrific crime” and called on anyone with information to contact West Midlands Police immediately.
The victim, a woman in her 20s, was attacked on Saturday 25 October in the Park Hall area of Walsall. Police said she was raped and assaulted at a nearby property by a man she did not know.
Following an urgent appeal, officers arrested John Ashby, 32, of no fixed abode, in the Perry Barr area of Birmingham early on 27 October. He has since been charged with multiple serious offences, including:
-
Rape
-
Sexual assault
-
Intentional strangulation
-
Racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm
-
Robbery
According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), it was “in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings” against the suspect. Ashby is scheduled to appear in court on 29 October 2025 for his first hearing.
Ben Samples, Head of the CPS West Midlands Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said:
“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court. We remind everyone that criminal proceedings are active and that the defendant has the right to a fair trial.”
Home Secretary: “A horrific crime that has shaken our communities”
Shabana Mahmood, MP for Birmingham Ladywood and the current Home Secretary, expressed deep concern for the victim and her family.
“This was a horrific crime. My thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. I know the fear that will be felt by the local Sikh community. I’ve sought assurances from police and community leaders that every step is being taken to support those affected.”
Mahmood urged anyone with information to assist the ongoing investigation:
“If you know something, no matter how small it may seem, please come forward and contact West Midlands Police as soon as possible.”
West Midlands Police: “A significant development in our investigation”
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer from the Public Protection Unit described the incident as “an absolutely appalling attack” and thanked the public for their support.
“This is a significant development in our investigation, and we continue to prioritise the welfare and safety of the victim. She is being supported by specially trained officers as we progress with the case.”
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby, of Walsall Police, also addressed the community’s concern:
“Walsall is a diverse area, and we know the fear and worry this awful attack will cause. We are committed to providing reassurance and bringing justice for the victim.”
Police confirmed that this attack is not being linked to other recent racially-aggravated offences in the Sandwell and Halesowen areas, where two separate incidents involving Sikh women are under investigation.
Local leaders, including Preet Kaur Gill MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, expressed shock and sadness, calling for solidarity and justice. She wrote on X:
“Deeply shocked and saddened to hear of another racially aggravated rape. My thoughts are with the victim and all those affected.”
West Midlands Police continue to appeal for anyone with relevant information, CCTV footage, or witness accounts to contact them via 101, quoting log 4027 of October 25.
