‘Great sacrifice inspires us to work harder’: On 104th anniversary, leaders salute martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh

As Wednesday marked the 104th anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a host of leaders across political spectrum poured in their tributes for the protesters who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Recalling the sacrifice made by the freedom fighters on this day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “I recall the sacrifices of all those martyred on this day in Jallianwala Bagh. Their great sacrifice inspires us to work even harder to fulfil the dreams of our great freedom fighters and build a strong and developed India.”

On April 13, 1919, hundreds of people protesting peacefully were gunned down by the British forces at the Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab’s Amritsar.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said it was on this day that the world saw the cruel face of the British rule. “On this day in 1919, in the form of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the whole world saw the cruel face of the British rule. This massacre hurt the countrymen in such a way that the freedom struggle turned into an individual movement. I salute the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh,” Shah tweeted.

Extended humble tributes to the martyrs, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwalwrote: “Humble tribute to the immortal sacrifice of all the brave martyrs of that massacre on Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Day.”

Echoing PM Modi’s words, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said this part of India’s history will always inspire people to raise their voices against oppression. “We sincerely bow to all the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a bloody story of brutal torture by the British government… This apocalypse will always inspire our people to raise their voices in unison against oppression…,” Mann wrote on the micro-blogging site.
