Prime Minister Keir Starmer has shared a powerful message to commemorate Vaisakhi 2025, paying homage to the deep cultural and spiritual importance of the festival while reaffirming the Labour government’s commitment to equality, unity, and service.
In a video released from 10 Downing Street and during a reception earlier this week, Starmer honoured the Sikh community’s enduring contribution to British society. “It’s really fantastic to be able to come together and to celebrate the contribution of British Sikhs to our nation,” he said. “From the armed forces to the NHS, from education to businesses—your impact is felt across every part of our society.”

Vaisakhi, celebrated every April, marks the creation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699 and is one of the most significant festivals in the Sikh calendar. It also coincides with the traditional harvest festival in Punjab, symbolising abundance and gratitude. At its heart, Vaisakhi embodies the values of courage, community, and sewa (selfless service)—principles that continue to shape Sikh identity globally.
Reflecting these ideals, Starmer praised the role of gurdwaras across the UK in offering food banks, shelter, and support to those in need—particularly during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. “I’m always very humbled when I see that work. It’s a visible sign of the values of Sikhism: compassion, courage, and service,” Starmer said.
As communities prepare for ongoing celebrations—including the Mayor of London’s annual event in Trafalgar Square—Starmer offered his warm wishes to Sikhs everywhere. “Happy Vaisakhi to all who are celebrating,” he concluded, emphasizing Labour’s continued stance against bigotry and for inclusivity.
Despite a setback at Southall’s Nagar Kirtan last week due to a food stall fire, the spirit of Vaisakhi remains strong, with community celebrations across the country showcasing the vibrant and unifying power of Sikh heritage.
