One of the most recognisable yet previously little-known figures within the Royal Household has been formally recognised for his decades of dedicated service to the Royal Family. Jagjivan Singh Khangura, affectionately known as “Jag”, has been appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in the King’s Birthday Honours, celebrating a career spent protecting King Charles III and senior members of the Royal Family.
For many years, Khangura remained largely out of the public eye despite regularly appearing alongside King Charles at major royal engagements. As the King’s personal head of security, his role required complete discretion while overseeing the Monarch’s protection during high-profile events, including the Coronation, state visits and official engagements both in the UK and overseas.
His identity only became more widely known following his recent retirement from the Metropolitan Police after more than three decades of service, including over 20 years within Royalty and Specialist Protection. Throughout his career, Khangura earned widespread respect from colleagues for his professionalism, leadership and unwavering commitment to public service.
The Royal Victorian Order is one of the highest personal honours bestowed by the Sovereign. Unlike many other honours, appointments to the Order are made personally by the King and recognise individuals who have provided exceptional personal service to the Monarch and the Royal Family. Receiving an MVO reflects the trust and dedication shown throughout Khangura’s distinguished career.
Following his retirement, Khangura reflected on his years of service in a heartfelt statement, saying:
“It’s been a privilege to serve and represent my colleagues and my community in role. I leave with the happiest of memories and the utmost respect for all those that serve and sacrifice for King and country.”
Friends and colleagues also paid tribute to the respected officer. At a retirement celebration held at Chelsea Barracks, businessman James Eden described Khangura as:
“Simply one of the finest people you will ever meet”, adding that he was “an absolute hero.”
The recognition has been warmly welcomed by many, particularly within the British Sikh community, where Khangura’s achievement is being seen as a proud example of the important contributions made by British Sikhs in public service. His career highlights decades of dedication, professionalism and commitment while serving at the very highest level of royal protection.
Khangura joins a number of Royal Household staff recognised in this year’s honours. Others receiving awards include Sir Michael Dixon, Head of the Royal Medical Household and the King’s personal physician, and several senior royal aides who have provided distinguished service to the Royal Family.
Although his role often required him to remain behind the scenes, Jagjivan Singh Khangura’s contribution to protecting the Royal Family has now been officially recognised. His appointment as Member of the Royal Victorian Order marks a fitting tribute to a remarkable policing career and a lifetime dedicated to serving both the Crown and the public.
