Pope Francis Dies at 88: A Global Mourning for a Transformative Leader

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a transformative figure in the Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

His death, following complications from double pneumonia, has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from around the world.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis ascended to the papacy in 2013. Over his 12-year tenure, he became known for his humility, progressive stances on social issues, and efforts to modernize the Church. He championed causes such as climate change, interfaith dialogue, and the rights of marginalized communities.

World leaders have expressed their condolences and admiration for Pope Francis. U.S. President Joe Biden praised his commitment to the poor and his efforts to bridge divides. King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom noted his compassion and dedication to people of faith. French President Emmanuel Macron described him as a man of humility who stood with the vulnerable. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted his efforts in promoting peace and harmony.

Despite his many achievements, Pope Francis faced criticism for not sufficiently addressing clergy sexual abuse and for limited progress on the role of women in the Church. Nevertheless, his legacy as a reformer and advocate for social justice remains significant.

The Vatican has announced that a public viewing of Pope Francis’s body will begin on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Basilica, with his funeral expected to take place within six days. A nine-day mourning period will follow, during which the College of Cardinals will convene to elect his successor.

As the world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, his teachings and actions continue to inspire millions. His emphasis on compassion, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship has left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church and global community.
