A disturbing incident in Calgary, Canada, has sparked global outrage after a South Asian woman was violently attacked on a railway platform while bystanders stood by in silence.
The attack occurred on Sunday at Calgary’s City Hall/Bow Valley College Station, where a man, later identified as Braydon Joseph James French, approached the woman. He grabbed her water bottle, splashed water on her face, and forcefully slammed her into the transit shelter’s walls. The assailant also attempted to steal her phone while violently shaking her.
The victim’s desperate screams for help echoed through the station, yet no one intervened to stop the assault. Instead, passersby watched in silence, allowing the attacker to casually walk away. The woman managed to call the police, who tracked and arrested French within 25 minutes.
Community Outrage and Concerns Over Racism
The video, widely shared on TikTok and Instagram, has drawn fierce criticism, particularly over the lack of intervention from bystanders. Many online users questioned whether the victim’s ethnicity played a role in the public’s reluctance to step in. Watch it here:

A popular Instagram page, The Canada Punjabi, highlighted the hypocrisy of reactions when victims belong to different ethnicities, with one commenter stating:
“If it was the other way around, the conversation would be about deportation. How about holding everyone accountable for their crimes equally?”
Another comment warned:
“Indians chasing life in Canada should watch videos like this before deciding to go there.”
Calgary Police arrested French in East Village shortly after the attack and assured the public that such incidents “will not be tolerated in our city.” However, they also stated that they do not believe the attack was racially motivated. Despite this, their Diversity Resource Team is now engaging with the South Asian community to address concerns. Read their official twitter statement:

For many South Asians living abroad, this incident is another painful reminder of the racial biases and dangers they continue to face. While Canada is often seen as a welcoming country for immigrants, cases like this expose the darker realities of prejudice and violence.
The incident serves as a stark wake-up call for stronger protections, community solidarity, and urgent action against public apathy – because no one should feel unsafe in a country they call home.
