Sukhbir Singh Badal Faces Akal Takht’s Verdict: A Turning Point for SAD and Punjab Politics

On December 2, 2024, Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), appeared before the Akal Takht in Amritsar to answer allegations of misconduct during his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab (2007–2017).

The Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority in Sikhism, found Badal guilty of actions deemed harmful to Sikh interests and issued directives that could reshape the future of SAD and Punjab’s political landscape.

The Punishment

The Akal Takht mandated that Sukhbir Badal, along with other SAD leaders, perform sewa (selfless service) at the Golden Temple. Despite a fractured foot, Badal was seen on December 3, clad in blue attire, fulfilling his duties, which included tasks like washing utensils, cleaning bathrooms, and guarding the temple’s entrance.

A significant moment was the plaque around his neck, which translated to:
“The True Guru, the Primal Being, is free of revenge and hate; He is God, the Great Giver.
I am a sinner; You are my Forgiver.
That sinner, who finds no protection anywhere
– if he comes seeking Your Sanctuary, then he becomes immaculate and pure.”

Additionally, the Akal Takht stripped his late father, Parkash Singh Badal, of the prestigious Panth Rattan Fakhr-e-Qaum (Pride of the Community) title, awarded in 2011. This symbolic move underscored the gravity of the alleged shortcomings in their administration.

Political Consequences

The Akal Takht directed the SAD working committee to accept Badal’s resignation as party president within three days and form a panel to elect new leadership within six months. This directive reflects growing discontent within Punjab’s Sikh community toward the SAD’s leadership and its perceived drift from core Panthic values.

Implications for Punjab

This public censure highlights the Akal Takht’s commitment to accountability and Sikh principles, while also signifying turbulence for the SAD. Once a dominant political force, the party has struggled to regain its influence in Punjab amidst changing public sentiments.

As the situation evolves, the actions against Badal signal a critical juncture for both SAD and Punjab’s sociopolitical environment. BritAsia TV will continue to track developments in this story.
