Sara Sharif’s case reveals a tragic pattern of abuse that sadly went unnoticed until it was too late. Her teachers and neighbors had seen signs of trouble, but the full extent of her suffering remained hidden.
In early 2023, Sara began wearing a hijab to school, becoming the only member of her household to do so. Prosecutors now suggest that she wore it to cover injuries to her face and head. Concerns from her school started much earlier, however. In June 2022, her teachers noticed a bruise under her left eye, and in March 2023, more bruises appeared on her chin and right eye. When her teacher gently asked her about the bruises, Sara often tried to hide them, pulling her hijab over her face. She would give conflicting stories, never revealing the truth about what was happening at home.

Meanwhile, neighbors also began to notice troubling signs. Chloe Redwin, a former neighbor of the family, recalled hearing loud “smacking” sounds from the household, followed by gut-wrenching screams. The mother, Beinash Batool, could often be heard shouting at the children, telling them to “shut up” or using abusive language. Ms. Redwin reported hearing these noises at all hours, but noticed they would stop whenever Sara’s father, Urfan Sharif, was at home. Despite this, when he was present, Urfan had apologized on a few occasions for the noise, acknowledging the disturbance but never taking further action.

Sara’s body was discovered in August 2023, after her father, stepmother, and uncle fled to Pakistan. As the case unfolds in court, both her father and stepmother have pled not guilty, despite overwhelming evidence of long-term abuse. This heartbreaking case raises urgent questions about the safety of vulnerable children and the importance of speaking up when warning signs appear.
