The world is moving forward every day, women’s rights are still not progressing with headlines this week showing how women in Iran are fighting for their right not to wear the hijab, while women in India are fighting for their right to wear one.
Feminists are arguing as to why can’t it be a woman’s right to choose. A story that has shaken many groups has been the story of Mahsa Amini. Mahsa was arrested due to not complying with the hijab standards; she was arrested for wearing her hijab loosely and died two days later, on suspicion of police brutality. Since then, protests have taken the streets of Iran with it being the biggest and most violent ones since 2019.
Women have publicly been cutting their hair in public and at least 12 people have died from these protests. Women from Iran are now arguing that women should be able to choose to wear the hijab when they want; when they believe they have that faith in God, not forced to wear it.
World leaders are describing her death as another example of police brutality which needs to be stopped and women should have the rights to choose what they do with their appearance.
On the other hand, you can clearly see the contrast of cultures, as Muslims of India are fighting for the right to be able to wear one as it has been banned in many places. Girls are unable to go to school and get their education due to not being allowed to follow their faith and beliefs.
Communities are asking when will women finally have rights to be able to choose what they wear and don’t wear. This is just another example of women’s rights being restricted and the question is when they will finally get their voices heard. We are hoping that this can change soon as the injustice to women’s rights has been going on for far too long and what will it take for everyone to turn around and say that is enough.
