“Truly humbled”: Meet Yasmine Dar – Manchester’s first female Asian Lord Mayor

A proud Mancunian, Councillor Yasmine Dar becomes the city’s first female Asian Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Councillor Dar was born in South Yorkshire but was raised in Manchester, but has lived in Manchester for over fifty years, alongside her five brothers and one sister.

Yasmine will be supported by her daughter Amina as Lady Mayoress, and her brother Majid Dar – a former councillor, will act as Lord Mayor’s consort during her year.

At the annual council meeting at Manchester Town Hall, the new Lord Mayor and “proud socialist” said she was born in Doncaster but “made in Manchester”. She has moved to Manchester when she was three-years-old.

Yasmine attended both Manley Park Primary School and Whalley Range High School. She then attended Abraham Moss College, where she studied Art and Design, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy.
