Birmingham to Benefit from “Branding, Facilities and Jobs” During Commonwealth Games 2022, Says Mayor Andy Street

West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street spoke exclusively to BritAsia TV about the ways in which the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 will benefit the city.

In a recent interview with Andy Street, host Jas Bahia asked the Mayor of West Midlands about how important the Commonwealth Games are for Birmingham city and how the international multi-sport event will benefit the wider region.

Introducing the points, Mr Street explained when [they] bid for the Games in 2017, [they] knew it was important – but given the Covid backdrop – it’s “even more important now.”

“It just gives the city an opportunity to show off around the world,” says Mr Street.

“There’s going to be a million people coming to visit, a billion people watching – a lot of them in India – and gives a real sort of branding of Birmingham around the world to show what’s going on here is just a unique opportunity,” he adds.

The second thing, the West Midlands Mayor continues, is that it gives “facilities” that would “never have come without the Commonwealth Games”.

Having invested nearly £1 billion in facilities such as athletic centres, swimming pools, train stations, tram links and rapid bus routes – is all there, Mr Street says as a “legacy for all of us to enjoy together”.

The third and most important aspect of the Games being hosted by the region is jobs, he concludes.

“There will be at the peak of the Commonwealth Games, about 35,000 jobs,” informs the Mayor.

“We’re expecting about 6,000 permanent roles in terms of people getting skills from the Games – and then they use those afterwards.”
