Rishi Sunak Leading in Race to Number 10

The race is on and in full swing for new leader of the UK. Current favourite to win is Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak with 88 votes. Second with 67 votes is Penny Mordaunt. However, having recently come under fire with fellow Tory MP’s for speaking out in favour of trans rights and gender recognition, she could potentially fall behind in the race for leadership.

After former health secretary Jeremy Hunt, and newly appointed chancellor Nadhim Zahawi were voted out of the first round of voting on Wednesday, there are currently six candidates left in the running including:

  • Kemi Badenoch
  • Suella Braverman
  • Penny Mordaunt
  • Rishi Sunak
  • Liz Truss
  • Tom Tugendhat

The second round of voting has begun today by the Tories, the result will be announced by the chair of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady, at 3pm.

The candidate with the fewest supporters will be eliminated before voting continues in  days to come, until they are down to the final two.
