Economic crisis in Sri Lanka sees president flee to Singapore in search of an escape, leaving his country in uproar.

On Wednesday, President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives following the recent economic crisis Sri Lanka is currently facing.

Said to be Sri Lankas worst economic crisis since 1948 after its independence, the on-going crisis which started in 2019 as a result of multiple factors such as; the Government making large tax cuts, money creation and the shifting of agricultural policy to organic or biological farming in addition to the recent Covid-19 pandemic and the Easter Bombings.

Due to these factors, the country has been facing severe inflation as well as daily blackouts, shortage of fuel and medical services. This has led to a civil uproar with mass protests against Rajapaksa and his cabinet demanding him to resign.

In a desperate ruse to escape, the president has fled from Sri Lanka to the Maldives and now on to Singapore, it is unsure if this is a transit stop or his final destination.
